Why hasn’t the FDA approved electronic cigarettes?

Electronic cigarettes entered the market in 2003, but it wasn’t until 2008 or 2009 they got really popular. Every day more people start using electronic cigarettes and a lot of former smokers say e-cigarettes helped them stop smoking. The elements and ingredients used in the e-cigarette and e-liquid don’t seem to contain anything which is not FDA approved. However, FDA hasn’t approved electronic cigarettes yet.

FDA states they want to regulate electronic cigarettes, but officially they haven’t made a clear statement about electronic cigarettes yet. This is probably because electronic cigarettes haven’t been on the market for a long time. Too little people have used e-cigarettes for too little time. Although e-cigarettes seem totally safe and are actually helping people with a healthier lifestyle, no one can be sure e-cigarettes don’t do any damage in twenty years. Nobody can proof e-cigarettes are 100 percent safe.

Off course there are plenty of other products which might cause damage in twenty years. Most of these products are approved, but electronic cigarettes are a different story. The tobacco industry is slowly reducing and many organizations have tried for years to make this happen. Approving electronic cigarettes without being sure this is the right solution, doesn’t feel right to a lot of people. Even if e-cigarettes are approved to be safe to use, a lot of people won’t like this. They feel the effort they’ve put in reducing tobacco smokers was all for nothing.

An important detail to keep in mind is that smoking tobacco is a lot worse than smoking electronic cigarettes. The damage done by tobacco is definitely much worse than the damage which might be (of might not be) done by e-cigarettes. Doctors say electronic cigarettes could save the lives of thousands of smokers if they would simply switch to electronic cigarettes. Regulating and forbidding e-cigarettes could actually prevent people from trying to stop smoking with the help of electronic cigarettes.
